What makes Belgian IPA different?
An IPA brings together two beer traditions with plenty of character. The IPA side brings hops, bitterness, citrus, tropical fruit or resinous notes, depending on the brewery and hop bill. The Belgian side brings yeast character, which can add spice, pepper, clove, soft fruit, dryness and a little warmth.
That combination gives the beer more depth than many standard pale ales. Rather than being built only around hop aroma, it often has a layered flavour that changes as it warms slightly in the glass. One sip might feel zesty and bitter, while the next brings out pear, orange peel, spice or a dry finish.
For drinkers who already enjoy Belgian brewing, this style can feel like a natural step into hoppier beer. For IPA fans, it gives a different kind of complexity, especially if you want something with more structure than a soft, juicy pale. It also sits neatly beside classic Belgian styles, including Belgian lagers, which offer a cleaner and more familiar route into Belgian beer.
A beer style built around balance
A good IPA should not feel like two styles fighting each other. The hops, malt and yeast should work together, with enough bitterness to keep the beer sharp and enough yeast character to make it feel distinctly Belgian.
Hop bitterness and aroma
The IPA side brings the sharper edge. Depending on the brewery, you might find citrus, pine, tropical fruit, stone fruit or floral notes. The bitterness can be firm, but it should still feel clean rather than harsh.
Belgian yeast character
The yeast is where the style starts to feel different from many modern IPAs. It can bring pepper, clove, pear, banana, soft fruit or a dry spiced finish. This gives the beer more depth than a hop-led pale ale.
Malt, strength and finish
The malt base is usually pale, but it can carry a gentle sweetness that supports the bitterness. Some versions feel crisp and dry, while others have a fuller body with notes of honey, bread crust or light caramel.
You might notice flavours such as:
• Orange zest, lemon peel or grapefruit
• Apricot, pear, peach or light tropical fruit
• Peppery spice, clove or herbal notes
• Firm bitterness with a dry finish
• A warming strength that still feels drinkable
Because the style can vary, it is worth paying attention to the brewery, ABV and tasting notes. Some versions lean closer to a Belgian tripel with extra hops, while others feel more like a modern IPA with Belgian yeast. Our range of German beers can also be a useful comparison point if you like crisp, well-made European beer but want to see how Belgian brewing takes a different path.
Who is this style for?
This is a beer for people who want flavour without losing balance. It is not usually the softest or sweetest beer on the shelf, but it rewards drinkers who enjoy a bit of sharpness, aroma and character.
It can be a good choice for:
• IPA drinkers looking for something with more yeast character
• Belgian beer fans who want a hoppier finish
• People who enjoy strong pale beers with a dry edge
• Drinkers who like beers with spice, bitterness and a clean finish
• Anyone who wants a change from standard pale ales
When you are choosing IPA, think about what you already enjoy. If you usually go for West Coast IPAs, look for something with firmer bitterness and citrus-led hops. If you prefer Belgian blondes or tripels, a version with a warmer malt body and yeast-led spice may suit you better.
How to enjoy it at home
A Belgian-inspired IPA is at its best when it is cold, but not ice cold. Straight from the fridge, the bitterness and carbonation might stand out first. Give it a few minutes in the glass and the yeast, fruit and spice should become easier to pick out.
A tulip glass, stemmed beer glass or IPA glass can help hold the aroma. You do not need to overthink it, but glassware can make a real difference with beers that have this much going on. Pour gently, leave a little room for the head, then let the aroma open up before the first sip.
Because this style often has a higher ABV than a session pale, it works well as a beer to enjoy slowly. It can feel bright and refreshing, but it still has enough strength and flavour to deserve a bit of attention. On warmer days, lighter European styles such as German shandy can also bring citrus-led refreshment into the fridge, giving you a different option for easier drinking.
Building a mixed beer box around IPA
IPA works well as the bold beer in a mixed box because it gives you plenty of aroma, bitterness and yeast character without needing every beer around it to be just as intense. It can sit alongside cleaner, softer and more familiar styles, giving the whole selection more range.
A good mixed box might include a few different routes through European and craft beer:
• An IPA for hop character, spice and depth
• A crisp lager for something clean and easy to share
• A pale ale for a softer hop profile
• A wheat beer or blonde ale for fruit and smoothness
• A darker beer for roasted malt, chocolate or coffee notes
This is where contrast matters. If every beer in the fridge is big, bitter and high in strength, the selection can feel tiring quite quickly. Mixing IPA with other Belgian beers gives you more choice across the week and makes the stronger beers stand out when you do open them.
It also makes the style a good option for gifting. Someone who already enjoys craft beer will appreciate the character, while someone building their taste in European beer can compare it against cleaner styles and get a better feel for what Belgian yeast brings to the glass.
Choosing the right beer for your taste
Because the category can cover a wide range of flavours, a little guidance helps. Some drinkers want a sharp, hop-forward beer, while others want something closer to a Belgian strong ale with extra aroma.
If you usually prefer something cleaner and more familiar, pilsner beers can give you a lighter comparison before moving into the bolder yeast and hop profile of IPA. A lighter version may suit you if you want citrus, dryness and a cleaner finish. A stronger version may suit you if you enjoy warming alcohol, bold yeast character and a more rounded malt base. The best choice comes down to when you plan to drink it, what else is in the fridge and how much bitterness you enjoy.
Our IPA selection is chosen with flavour, brewery quality and drinkability in mind. We look for beers that have a clear reason to be on the shelf, not just a label that fits a category. That might mean a modern can from a respected craft brewery, a Belgian-inspired brew from elsewhere in Europe or a one-off release that brings something different to the fridge.
Why buy from The Epicurean?
The Epicurean is built around proper beer choice, not filler. We are independent beer specialists with shops in Stockport and West Didsbury, as well as an online range for people who want carefully picked craft and European beers delivered to their door.
We focus on beers that are worth drinking, including Belgian styles, German classics, lagers, pales, IPAs, alcohol-free options and mixed gifts. This means you can build a box around a favourite style or add a few wildcards alongside beers you already know you like.
People often come to us when they want something better than the standard supermarket selection but do not want to spend ages working out what to buy. A few Belgian-inspired IPAs can sit neatly beside other European styles, while a craft beer subscription gift gives someone a changing selection without having to pick every beer yourself.
Find your next Belgian-inspired IPA
IPAs from Belgium are a great choice when you want hops with more depth, yeast character with more bite and a beer that feels bold without losing balance. It can be fruity, dry, spicy, bitter and aromatic, often all in the same glass.
If you are building a mixed box, adding something different to the fridge or looking for a beer with more character than your usual IPA, this style is well worth trying. The right bottle or can brings together the punch of modern hops and the character of Belgian brewing in a way that feels distinctive, satisfying and full of flavour.
